  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays

Radiologic technologist students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among technicians, usually requires 18 months to two years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to complete and is more comprehensive in nature. The majority of students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are other similar majors that are acceptable as well. One thing to consider is that Kersey CO radiographer schools have a practical training or lab component as part of their curriculum. It may frequently be satisfied by participating in an internship or externship program which a large number of colleges offer through local hospitals and clinics in their area. After you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you will need to comply with any certification or licensing requirements in Colorado or the state you will be working as applicable.

Radiographer Licensing and Certification

Once you have graduated from an X-Ray tech college, depending on the state where you will be practicing you might need to become licensed. Most states do mandate licensing, and their criteria vary so contact your state. Currently, all states that do mandate licensing will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the purpose of licensing, but a number provide additional options for testing also. Some states also require certification as a component of the licensing process, otherwise it is voluntary. Having said that, numerous Kersey CO employers will only hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it may improve your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an accepted program in addition to a passing score on their rigorous exam. ARRT also calls for re-certification every other year, which can be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an exam.

Online X-Ray Technician Schools

This is the same for online degree schools. So while you can still obtain your degree online, a significant amount of the training will be satisfied either in a college lab or in an externship off campus. Practical training is usually provided in regional hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the colleges. But the online section of the training may be accessed in the comfort of your Kersey CO home. Students who keep working while earning their degree often find that the online style of learning is far more practical with their active schedules. Plus online schools are frequently cheaper than traditional alternatives. Along with reduced tuition, expenditures for study materials and commuting can be reduced as well. But just be sure that the online school you enroll in is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less structured type of training, then an online degree may be the ideal option for you.

Points to Ask Radiology Tech Schools

As soon as you have chosen the type of degree that you want to earn, you can start the process of searching for and evaluating Kersey CO x-ray tech schools. You will also have to determine if you want to attend classes online or travel to a local campus. If you choose the latter, then naturally the location of the school will be relevant. The price of tuition and supplementary expenses will be a determining factor as well. But in addition to cost and location, what else should you factor in when evaluating colleges? Well, you should check out if the schools are accredited, and if they provide externship or internship programs. To help you learn some of these important details before you make your selection, we have put together a list of questions that you need to ask the colleges you are looking at.

Are the X-Ray Technician Programs Accredited? A large number of radiology tech schools have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still important to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through a rigorous evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial aid and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Kersey CO health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Find out if the Colorado radiology technician programs you are interested in have partnerships with regional hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent way to obtain practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Kersey CO healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the x-ray tech programs you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Kersey CO healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the college they decide on will need to be within driving distance of their Kersey CO residence. Students who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Kersey CO colleges you are considering what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the x-ray tech program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the x-ray tech  school you finally choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in Kersey CO, confirm that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.
