Regardless of the name, each has the same primary job description, which is to employ imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the objective of diagnosis and treatment. A number of radiologic technologists may also provide radiation therapy for treating cancer. Many elect to perform as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialization, such as mammography. They can work in Livingston AL hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technologist may utilize include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans

  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers have to care for their equipment and also regularly assess its performance and safety. They are also required to retain in-depth records of all of their diagnostic procedures. As Livingston AL health practitioners, they are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct.

Radiologic technologist pupils have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most common among techs, generally requires 18 months to two years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to four years to complete and is more expansive in nature. Most students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional similar majors that may be acceptable as well. One thing to keep in mind is that Livingston AL radiographer schools have a clinical training or lab component as part of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by participating in an externship program which many schools offer through local clinics and hospitals in their region. After you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you will need to abide by any licensing or certification mandates in Alabama or the state you will be working as applicable.

Radiologic Technologist Licensing and Certification

Once you have graduated from an X-Ray tech school, depending on the state where you will be employed you might need to be licensed. The majority of states do require licensing, and their prerequisites vary so check with your state. At present, all states that do require licensing will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the licensing application, but several provide other options for testing also. Several states also call for certification as a component of the licensing procedure, otherwise it is optional. Having said that, many Livingston AL employers favor hiring radiology techs that have earned certification so it may enhance your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an accepted program in addition to a passing score on their comprehensive examination. ARRT also calls for re-certification every other year, which can be fulfilled with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an examination.

Students who continue working while earning their degree often discover that the online style of learning is much more practical with their active schedules. Plus online programs are generally more affordable than on-campus alternatives. In addition to reduced tuition, costs for study materials and commuting can be lessened as well. But just make certain that the online school you select is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn with this less formalized style of training, then an online school may be the ideal choice for you.

Points to Ask Radiographer Programs

When you have chosen the type of degree that you want to obtain, you can initiate the process of searching for and assessing Livingston AL x-ray technician colleges. You will also have to decide if you want to attend online classes or travel to a local campus. If you opt for the latter, then of course the location of the college will be important. The cost of tuition and ancillary expenses will be a material factor as well. But along with cost and location, what more should you factor in when evaluating schools? Well, you should find out if the schools are accredited, and if they provide externship or internship programs. To help you learn some of these crucial details before you make your selection, we have put together a list of questions that you should ask the schools you are assessing.

Are the Radiology Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of radiology tech colleges have earned some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still imperative to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through an extensive examination of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Livingston AL health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Find out if the Alabama radiology tech colleges you are evaluating have partnerships with area hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific manner to obtain practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help graduates and students establish professional connections in the Livingston AL health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Find out if the x-ray tech schools you are considering have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Livingston AL healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they select will need to be within travelling distance of their Livingston AL home. Individuals who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Livingston AL colleges you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the x-ray technician program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the radiographer  program you ultimately select can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in Livingston AL, make certain that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family obligations.
