X-Ray Tech Work Summary

There are several professional titles for x-ray techs (technicians or technologists). They may also be called radiologic technicians or technologists, radiographers or radiology techs. No matter what the name, they all have the identical fundamental job description, which is to use imaging machines to internally view patients for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists might also provide radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Some choose to practice as generalists, while others may choose a specialization, for example mammography. They may practice in Heber Springs AR clinics, hospitals, family practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technician might work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers have to maintain their equipment and also routinely analyze its functionality and safety. They are also required to keep complete records of all of their diagnostic procedures. As Heber Springs AR health practitioners, they must adhere to a code of conduct and a high professional standard.

Radiology Tech Degrees

Radiologic technologist students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most typical among technicians, usually takes 18 months to two years to finish depending on the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as much as 4 years to finish and is more expansive in nature. The majority of students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are other related majors that may be appropriate also. Something to keep in mind is that Heber Springs AR radiographer schools have a practical training or lab component as part of their course of study. It may often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship or externship program which a large number of colleges sponsor through local hospitals and clinics in their area. Once you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you will need to comply with any licensing or certification mandates in Arkansas or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

X-Ray Tech Certification and Licensing

After you have graduated from an X-Ray tech school, based on the state where you will be employed you may need to be licensed. The majority of states do mandate licensing, and their prerequisites differ so get in touch with your state. At present, all states that do require licensing will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the licensing application, but many approve other options for testing as well. Several states also require certification as part of the licensing procedure, if not it is voluntary. Having said that, many Heber Springs AR employers would rather hire radiology techs that are certified so it might improve your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program calls for graduation from an approved program in addition to a passing score on their rigorous examination. ARRT also demands re-certification every two years, which may be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an exam.

Online Radiology Technician Colleges

This is the same for online degree colleges. So even though you can still obtain your online degree, a large amount of the training will be satisfied either in a college lab or in an internship off-campus. Practical training is typically performed in area family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the colleges. However the online portion of the training can be accessed in the privacy of your Heber Springs AR home. Students who continue working while earning their degree often discover that the online style of education is far more practical with their active schedules. Plus online schools are generally cheaper than on-campus options. In addition to lower tuition, costs for commuting and study materials may be reduced also. But just make certain that the online college you choose is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn with this less structured style of training, then an online degree may be the best option for you.

Points to Ask Radiology Tech Colleges

As soon as you have selected the kind of degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of finding and assessing Heber Springs AR x-ray tech colleges. You will also need to decide if you prefer to attend online classes or drive to a nearby campus. If you choose the latter, then obviously the location of the college will be relevant. The price of tuition and supplementary expenses will be a determining variable as well. But along with cost and location, what more should you look at when comparing colleges? Well, you need to ask if the schools are accredited, and if they provide internship or externship programs. To help you uncover some of these important details prior to making your decision, we have put together a list of questions that you need to ask the schools you are reviewing.

Are the Radiology Tech Schools Accredited? A large number of radiology technician colleges have received some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a rigorous assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Heber Springs AR health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Find out if the Arkansas radiology technician programs you are interested in have relationships with regional clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent way to obtain hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Heber Springs AR health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the x-ray tech programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Heber Springs AR healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the school they choose will need to be within commuting distance of their Heber Springs AR home. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Heber Springs AR colleges you are looking at what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the radiology technician program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the x-ray tech  program you ultimately select can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in Heber Springs AR, make sure that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
