These inquiries and others you must ask the colleges you are considering are provided later in this post. But first, let’s discuss what a radiology tech does and the degrees and education choices that are offered.

Radiology Technician Career Description

There are a number of professional designations for x-ray techs (technologists or technicians). They may also be called radiologic technicians or technologists, radiographers or radiology techs. Regardless of the name, they all have the identical primary job function, which is to use imaging machines to internally view patients for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists might also provide radiation therapy for treating cancer. Some elect to practice as generalists, while others may choose a specialization, for instance mammography. They can practice in Endeavor WI clinics, hospitals, family practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technician may utilize include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers must take care of their equipment plus regularly assess its functionality and safety. They are also expected to keep complete records of all of their diagnostic procedures. As Endeavor WI health practitioners, they must adhere to a code of conduct and a high professional standard.

X-Ray Tech Degrees

Radiologic technologist students have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most common among technicians, usually takes 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as much as four years to complete and is more extensive in scope. The majority of students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional related majors that may be acceptable as well. Something to consider is that Endeavor WI radiographer schools have a practical training or lab component as a component of their course of study. It may typically be fulfilled by taking part in an externship program which many colleges sponsor through local clinics and hospitals in their area. After you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you must abide by any licensing or certification mandates in Wisconsin or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

X-ray Technician Licensing and Certification

After you have graduated from an Radiologist college, based on the state where you will be practicing you may have to be licensed. The majority of states do mandate licensing, and their prerequisites vary so contact your state. At present, all states that do mandate licensing will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the licensing application, but a number offer additional options for testing also. Some states also require certification as part of the licensing process, if not it is voluntary. Having said that, numerous Endeavor WI employers will only hire radiology techs that are certified so it may enhance your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program calls for graduation from an approved program as well as a passing score on their comprehensive examination. ARRT also requires re-certification every 2 years, which may be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an examination.

Online X-Ray Tech Colleges

attending x-ray tech school online in Endeavor 53930As a part of any degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have clinical or lab training included in their curriculum. This is the same for online degree programs. So although you can still earn your degree online, a large amount of the training will be completed either in a school lab or in an externship off-campus. Practical training is typically provided in local hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the schools. However the online portion of the training can be accessed in the comfort of your Endeavor WI residence. Students who keep working while obtaining their degree usually find that the online approach to learning is much more convenient with their hectic schedules. Plus online programs are generally less costly than traditional options. In addition to lower tuition, costs for commuting and study materials may be lessened as well. But just confirm that the online school you choose is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn with this less formalized style of training, then an online degree may be the ideal option for you.

Topics to Ask Radiologic Tech Schools

Once you have selected the kind of degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of locating and evaluating Endeavor WI x-ray technician schools. You will also have to decide if you prefer to attend online classes or travel to a nearby campus. If you choose the latter, then obviously the location of the school will be critical. The cost of tuition and supplementary expenditures will be a material factor also. But along with cost and location, what else should you look at when evaluating schools? Well, you should find out if the schools are accredited, and if they provide externship or internship programs. To help you learn some of these important details prior to making your decision, we have put together a list of questions that you should ask the programs you are considering.

Are the X-Ray Technician Colleges Accredited? Most xray technician colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still important to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools earning accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a rigorous review of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Endeavor WI health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Inquire if the Wisconsin radiology technician colleges you are reviewing have associations with local clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific manner to receive hands on training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may assist students and graduates form professional relationships in the Endeavor WI medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the x-ray tech schools you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Endeavor WI healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the school they decide on will need to be within commuting distance of their Endeavor WI residence. Individuals who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Endeavor WI schools you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the radiology technician program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the x-ray tech  school you finally pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in Endeavor WI, verify that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.

Why Did You Choose to Be an Xray Technician?

When prepping to interview for an X-Ray Tech job, it's advantageous to review questions you might be asked. One of the questions that interviewers frequently ask radiographer prospects is "What drove you to pick radiography as a career?". What the interviewer is trying to discover is not only the private reasons you might have for becoming an Xray technician, but also what qualities and talents you possess that make you outstanding at what you do. You will likely be asked questions relating exclusively to radiography, along with a certain number of standard interview questions, so you must ready a number of approaches about how you want to respond to them. Given that there are so many variables that go into choosing a career, you can respond to this fundamental question in a variety of ways. When formulating an answer, try to include the reasons the work appeals to you along with the abilities you have that make you an outstanding X-Ray tech and the leading candidate for the job. Don't try to memorize a response, but take down several ideas and anecdotes that relate to your personal experiences and strengths. Going over sample responses can help you to formulate your own concepts, and give you ideas of what to include to impress the recruiter.
