A number of radiologic technologists might also administer radiation therapy for treating cancer. Some choose to perform as generalists, while others may choose a specialization, for example mammography. They may practice in West Hartford CT hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technologist may work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

As West Hartford CT medical practitioners, they must adhere to a code of conduct and a high professional standard.

X-Ray Tech Degrees Available

x-ray machine in West Hartford CTThe primary prerequisite for attending a radiology tech school is to have attained a high school diploma or GED. Radiologic technologist pupils have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most typical among techs, normally requires 18 months to two years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to 4 years to complete and is more comprehensive in nature. The majority of students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional similar majors that may be appropriate also. Something to consider is that West Hartford CT radiographer colleges have a clinical training or lab component as a component of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an externship program which a large number of colleges sponsor through local hospitals and clinics in their region. After you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you will need to comply with any certification or licensing mandates in Connecticut or the state you will be working as applicable.

X-ray Technician Certification and Licensing

When you have graduated from an x-ray technician school, based on the state where you will be employed you may need to be licensed. Most states do mandate licensing, and their prerequisites vary so check with your state. Currently, all states that do mandate licensing will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the purpose of licensing, but a number provide other alternatives for testing as well. Some states also call for certification as a component of the licensing process, if not it is voluntary. Having said that, many West Hartford CT employers will only hire radiology techs that are certified so it may improve your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an approved program as well as a passing score on their comprehensive examination. ARRT also calls for re-certification every other year, which may be fulfilled with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an exam.

Online Radiology Tech Schools

attending x-ray tech school online in West Hartford 05084As a component of any degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have clinical or lab training included in their curriculum. This is the same for online degree programs. So while you can still obtain your degree online, a significant portion of the training will be satisfied either in a school lab or in an externship off campus. Clinical training is typically provided in local hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the colleges. But the online section of the training can be accessed in the privacy of your West Hartford CT residence. Students who continue working while obtaining their degree typically discover that the online approach to education is far more practical with their busy schedules. Plus online programs are generally cheaper than traditional alternatives. In addition to lower tuition, expenses for study materials and commuting may be lessened as well. But just be sure that the online college you pick is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn with this less formalized style of training, then online classes may be the best choice for you.

Subjects to Ask X Ray Tech Schools

As soon as you have selected the type of degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of finding and evaluating West Hartford CT x-ray tech colleges. You will also need to decide if you want to attend classes online or travel to a nearby campus. If you choose the latter, then obviously the location of the college will be important. The cost of tuition and secondary expenditures will be a determining variable as well. But in addition to location and cost, what more should you look at when reviewing colleges? Well, you should find out if the schools are accredited, and if they provide internship or externship programs. To help you uncover some of these important details before you make your selection, we have compiled a list of questions that you must ask the colleges you are reviewing.

Are the X-Ray Technician Programs Accredited? A large number of radiology technician colleges have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still important to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through a rigorous assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many West Hartford CT health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the Connecticut xray technician colleges you are reviewing have relationships with area hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific means to get practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help graduates and students develop professional connections in the West Hartford CT health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Ask if the x-ray tech schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with West Hartford CT healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the college they choose will need to be within travelling distance of their West Hartford CT home. Students who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the West Hartford CT schools you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the x-ray technician program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the x-ray tech  program you ultimately select can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in West Hartford CT, verify that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.

Some Background on West Hartford Connecticut

West Hartford, Connecticut

West Hartford is an affluent suburb located in Hartford County, Connecticut, United States. Located 5 miles (8.0 km) west of downtown Hartford, the population was 63,268 at the 2010 census.[1]

The town is known for its popular downtown area colloquially known as "West Hartford Center," or simply "The Center," which is centered on Farmington Avenue and South/North Main Street. West Hartford Center has been the community's main hub since the late 17th century. In 2008, Blue Back Square opened as a new addition to the central area.[2] Blue Back includes a bookstore, a movie theater, two parking garages, various physician and medical offices, and several restaurants.

Incorporated as a town in 1854, the town was previously a parish of Hartford, founded in 1672.[3] Among the southernmost of the communities encompassed within the Hartford-Springfield Knowledge Corridor metropolitan region, West Hartford is home to University of Hartford and the University of Saint Joseph.

In 2010, Kiplinger's Personal Finance magazine listed West Hartford as one of the nation's "10 Great Cities for Raising Families."[4] In 2010, Kiplinger's ranked West Hartford #9 on its "10 Best Cities for the Next Decade" list.[5] In 2010, CNN Money ranked West Hartford as the 55th best small city in America.[6] In 2010, the national online magazine Travelandleisure.com cited West Hartford as one of 10 "coolest" suburbs in the nation. The magazine called the West Hartford Reservoir off Farmington Avenue "West Hartford's version of Central Park,"[7] and it also noted the town's "vacation-worthy hot spots, with cutting-edge restaurants, great shopping, and plenty of parking."[8]

According to new archaeological evidence, the Wampanoag people used West Hartford as one of their winter camps. Fishing and hunting along the Connecticut River, the area of West Hartford offered the Wampanoag people a refuge from the cold winter wind and the river's severe spring flooding. In 1636 Reverend Thomas Hooker led a group of followers from what is now Cambridge, Massachusetts to the "Great River" and eventually established the Hartford Colony. As the colony grew, additional land was needed. In 1672 the Proprietors of Hartford ordered that a Division be created to the West. A total of "72 Long Lots" were laid out between today's Quaker Lane in the East and Mountain Road in the West. The northern boundary was Bloomfield, and the Southern, present day New Britain Avenue. (The western boundary was extended in 1830 to include part of Farmington). In the 1670s the area was referred to as the "West Division" of Hartford. This remained the official name until 1806 when Connecticut General Assembly started referring to it as "the Society of West Hartford."
