  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans

  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiologic technologist students have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among technicians, generally takes 18 months to two years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to 4 years to finish and is more comprehensive in nature. The majority of students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are other related majors that are acceptable as well. One thing to keep in mind is that Taft CA radiographer schools have a clinical training or lab component as a component of their course of study. It may often be satisfied by taking part in an internship or externship program which many colleges sponsor through local hospitals and clinics in their region. Once you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you will need to abide by any licensing or certification requirements in California or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

X-Ray Tech Certification and Licensing

Once you have graduated from an X-Ray tech program, based on the state where you will be practicing you might have to become licensed. The majority of states do mandate licensing, and their criteria vary so check with your state. At present, all states that do require licensure will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the licensing application, but a number approve additional alternatives for testing also. Several states also require certification as part of the licensing process, if not it is optional. However, many Taft CA employers would rather hire radiology techs that are certified so it might increase your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program calls for graduation from an approved program in addition to a passing score on their comprehensive examination. ARRT also demands re-certification every other year, which can be fulfilled with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an examination.

Practical training is typically provided in area family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the colleges. However the online segment of the training may be accessed in the privacy of your Taft CA residence. Students who continue working while obtaining their degree usually find that the online style of education is far more convenient with their active schedules. Plus online schools are generally more affordable than traditional options. Along with lower tuition, expenses for commuting and study materials may be lessened also. But just confirm that the online school you choose is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn with this less formalized style of training, then an online school may be the right option for you.

Topics to Ask Radiographer Programs

When you have chosen the kind of degree that you want to obtain, you can initiate the process of locating and evaluating Taft CA x-ray tech schools. You will also need to decide if you prefer to attend online classes or commute to a nearby campus. If you choose the latter, then of course the location of the school will be critical. The cost of tuition and supplementary expenditures will be a determining variable also. But along with cost and location, what else should you factor in when reviewing colleges? Well, you should check out if the colleges are accredited, and if they provide internship or externship programs. To help you uncover some of these important details before you make your decision, we have compiled a list of questions that you must ask the colleges you are considering.

Are the Radiology Tech Schools Accredited? Most radiology technician colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still crucial to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through an extensive assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Taft CA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Inquire if the California xray technician colleges you are evaluating have associations with local clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific manner to obtain hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help graduates and students establish professional connections in the Taft CA medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Find out if the radiographer programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Taft CA healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the school they select will need to be within commuting distance of their Taft CA home. Students who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit way in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Taft CA colleges you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the radiology tech program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the x-ray tech  college you ultimately choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in Taft CA, make sure that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.

Why Did You Decide to Become a Radiology Technician?

When getting ready to interview for an X-Ray Tech job, it's important to reflect on questions you could be asked. One of the things that interviewers typically ask radiographer candidates is "What drove you to decide on radiography as a career?". What the interviewer is hoping to uncover is not merely the personal reasons you may have for becoming an Xray technician, but additionally what attributes and talents you have that make you good at your profession. You will probably be asked questions relating primarily to radiography, as well as a certain number of standard interview questions, so you need to organize several ideas about how you would like to answer them. Since there are so many variables that go into selecting a career, you can address this primary question in a variety of ways. When preparing an answer, attempt to include the reasons the profession appeals to you as well as the strengths you have that make you an exceptional X-Ray tech and the perfiect candidate for the position. Don't attempt to memorize a response, but take down several ideas and topics that pertain to your own experiences and strengths. Reading through sample answers can help you to formulate your own concepts, and inspire ideas of what to include to wow the interviewer.

Some Background on Taft California

Taft, California

Taft (formerly Moron, Moro, and Siding Number Two)[9] is a city in the foothills at the extreme southwestern edge of the San Joaquin Valley, in Kern County, California. Taft is located 32 miles (51 km) west-southwest of Bakersfield,[9] at an elevation of 955 feet (291 m).[7] The population was 9,327 at the 2010 census. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 15.1 square miles (39.1 km2).

It was named for President William H. Taft in 1909.[10]

The town began as Siding Number Two on the Sunset Railroad.[9] According to a display at the West Kern Oil Museum, local residents asked the Southern Pacific Railroad if the station could be named Moro when the rails arrived in about 1900, but a railroad official declined because the name would be too easily confused with the coastal town of Morro Bay. Instead, the railroad directed the station be called Moron, a word which as yet had no association with stupidity. Pictures of local businesses, including the Moron Pharmacy, hang in the museum.

After a fire burned much of the town, the name was changed to Taft in honor of William Howard Taft.[9]

Taft is situated in a major petroleum and natural gas production region in California, and is one of the few remaining towns in the United States which exist exclusively because of nearby oil reserves. The discovery of oil in the region occurred in the late 19th century near Maricopa, seven miles (11.27 km) south of Taft. Many other oil and gas accumulations were discovered around Taft during the early-to-mid-20th century, notably the Midway field (near Fellows, California), Sunset field (later found to be part of the same trend, accounting for the modern combined name of Midway-Sunset), and the Buena Vista. The town is built directly between these two huge fields. The operational activities within these fields, as well as Occidental Petroleum's Elk Hills Oil Field north of Taft, have been the economic life blood of the town for over 100 years.
