Marion AL x-ray tech internship programCongrats on your career choice to enroll in an x-ray tech school near Marion AL so you can learn to be a radiologic technician. But now that you have made a decision to enter the rewarding field of healthcare, exactly how do you go about selecting the ideal college and program to ensure that you will get the appropriate training to become a qualified professional? And considering that most states do require that x-ray techs become licensed, based on where you ultimately practice you might require training to pass a licensing examination. So it’s important that you research each of the colleges you are looking at so that you can evaluate each program. Many prospective students begin by looking for colleges or technical schools that are within commuting distance of their residences. Next, they compare tuition and frequently settle on the most affordable cost. But while location and cost should be considered, there are other critical qualifiers as well. For instance, you must find out if the radiology tech schools have earned accreditation, or if they offer internships. These questions and others you should ask the schools you are considering are presented later in this article. But first, let’s discuss what a x-ray tech does and the degrees and training options that are offered.

X-Ray Technician Career Description

There are multiple professional titles for x-ray techs (technologists or technicians). They can also be called radiologic technicians or technologists, radiographers or radiology techs. Regardless of the name, each has the identical fundamental job description, which is to employ imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. A number of radiologic technologists may also administer radiation therapy for treating cancer. Some choose to practice as generalists, while others may choose a specialty, for instance mammography. They can practice in Marion AL clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray tech might work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers have to maintain their equipment and also regularly assess its functionality and safety. They are also required to keep in-depth records of all of their diagnostic procedures. As Marion AL health practitioners, they must adhere to a code of conduct and a high professional standard.

X-Ray Technician Degrees Offered

Radiologic technologist students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most common among technicians, usually requires 18 months to two years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at as much as four years to finish and is more comprehensive in scope. The majority of students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are other similar majors that are acceptable also. Something to consider is that Marion AL radiographer colleges have a practical training or lab component as part of their curriculum. It can frequently be fulfilled by participating in an internship or externship program which many schools offer through local hospitals and clinics in their area. After you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you must comply with any licensing or certification requirements in Alabama or the state you will be working as applicable.

X-ray Technician Certification and Licensing

After you have graduated from an X-Ray tech college, based on the state where you will be working you may have to become licensed. Most states do mandate licensing, and their criteria vary so contact your state. Currently, all states that do mandate licensure will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the licensing application, but several offer other alternatives for testing also. A number of states also call for certification as part of the licensing procedure, otherwise it is optional. Having said that, numerous Marion AL employers favor hiring radiology techs that have earned certification so it could increase your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program calls for graduation from an approved program in addition to a passing score on their comprehensive exam. ARRT also demands re-certification every other year, which may be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an examination.

Online X-Ray Tech Programs

attending x-ray tech school online in Marion 36756As a part of any degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have practical or lab training included in their curriculum. This is the same for online degree schools. So even though you can still obtain your online degree, a large portion of the training will be fulfilled either in a school lab or in an internship off-campus. Clinical training is usually conducted in regional family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the colleges. But the online portion of the training may be attended in the comfort of your Marion AL home. Students who keep working while obtaining their degree usually find that the online style of education is far more convenient with their hectic schedules. Plus online schools are often cheaper than conventional alternatives. Along with reduced tuition, expenses for commuting and study materials can be lessened also. But just make certain that the online school you select is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn with this less formalized type of training, then an online school may be the ideal choice for you.

What to Ask Radiographer Schools

As soon as you have chosen the type of degree that you want to earn, you can begin the process of looking for and assessing Marion AL x-ray tech schools. You will also have to decide if you prefer to attend online classes or commute to a local campus. If you choose the latter, then obviously the location of the school will be important. The price of tuition and secondary expenditures will be a determining factor also. But in addition to cost and location, what else should you look at when evaluating colleges? Well, you need to check out if the colleges are accredited, and if they sponsor internship or externship programs. To help you uncover some of these essential details prior to making your selection, we have assembled a list of questions that you should ask the programs you are looking at.

Are the Radiology Technician Colleges Accredited? A large number of radiology technician schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still imperative to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through a rigorous examination of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Marion AL employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Provided? Ask if the Alabama xray tech colleges you are assessing have associations with regional hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent manner to obtain practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help students and graduates establish professional connections in the Marion AL medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Ask if the radiographer schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Marion AL healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they decide on will need to be within travelling distance of their Marion AL residence. Students who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Marion AL schools you are researching what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the radiology technician program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the x-ray tech  college you finally choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in Marion AL, check that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.

Why Did You Desire to Be a Radiologic Technologist?

When getting ready to interview for an X-Ray Tech job, it's helpful to consider questions you could be asked. Among the things that recruiters often ask radiographer candidates is "What compelled you to pick radiography as a career?". What the interviewer is attempting to learn is not only the personal reasons you may have for being an X-Ray tech, but also what qualities and talents you possess that make you exceptional at your profession. You will probably be asked questions relating specifically to radiography, as well as a significant number of general interview questions, so you should ready some strategies about how you want to respond to them. Given that there are several factors that go into selecting a career, you can respond to this primary question in a variety of ways. When formulating an answer, try to include the reasons the work interests you along with the talents you possess that make you an exceptional X-Ray tech and the perfiect choice for the job. Don't make an effort to memorize a response, but take down some ideas and talking points that pertain to your own strengths and experiences. Reading through sample responses can help you to formulate your own concepts, and provide ideas of what to include to enthuse the recruiter.

Some Background on Marion Alabama

Marion, Alabama

Marion is a city in, and the county seat of, Perry County, Alabama, United States.[3] As of the 2010 census, the population of the city is 3,686, up 4.8% over 2000. First known as Muckle Ridge, the city was renamed after a hero of the American Revolution, Francis Marion.

Marion is the 152th most populous city in the state of Alabama, of 573 cities.

Formerly the territory of the Creek Indians, it was founded shortly after 1819 as Muckle Ridge. The city was renamed in honor of Francis Marion, the "Swamp Fox," hero of the American Revolutionary War, in 1822. It incorporated as a town the same year and also became the second county seat after the hamlet of Perry Ridge was unsuitable. In 1829, it upgraded from a town to a city.[4] From the very early days, Marion created considerable history for a small town on the western frontier of Alabama. The old City Hall (1832) is but one of many antebellum public buildings, churches, and homes in the city today.

General Sam Houston, while between terms as 1st and 3rd President of the Republic of Texas, married Margaret Lea of Marion in the city in 1840.

At the 1844 meeting of the Alabama Baptist State Convention in Marion, the "Alabama Resolutions" were passed. This was one of the factors that led to the 1845 formation of the Southern Baptist Convention in Augusta, Georgia.
