For example, you must ask if the radiology tech schools are accredited, or if they offer internships. These questions and others you must ask the colleges you are examining are provided later in this post. But first, let’s talk about what a x-ray technician does and the degrees and training choices that are offered.

X-Ray Technician Work Summary

There are multiple professional designations for x-ray techs (technicians or technologists). They can also be called radiologic technologists, radiologic technicians, radiology technicians or radiographers. Regardless of the name, they all have the same major job description, which is to utilize imaging machines to internally view patients for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists might also provide radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Some elect to work as generalists, while others may choose a specialty, such as mammography. They can work in Loomis CA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technician might work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers must take care of their equipment and also frequently analyze its functionality and safety. They are additionally required to keep in-depth records of each of their diagnostic procedures. As Loomis CA health practitioners, they are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct.

Radiologic technologist pupils have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most typical among technicians, generally requires 18 months to two years to finish based upon the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to complete and is more extensive in scope. Most students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are other related majors that may be appropriate as well. Something to consider is that Loomis CA radiographer schools have a clinical training or lab component as a component of their curriculum. It can frequently be fulfilled by participating in an internship or externship program which many colleges sponsor through local hospitals and clinics in their region. After you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you must comply with any certification or licensing requirements in California or the state you will be working as applicable.

X-Ray Tech Licensing and Certification

When you have graduated from an x-ray technician school, depending on the state where you will be practicing you might have to be licensed. Most states do mandate licensing, and their requirements vary so contact your state. Presently, all states that do mandate licensing will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the purpose of licensing, but many approve additional options for testing also. A number of states also call for certification as part of the licensing process, if not it is voluntary. Having said that, numerous Loomis CA employers prefer to hire radiology techs that are certified so it may improve your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an approved program in addition to a passing score on their rigorous exam. ARRT also demands re-certification every 2 years, which may be met with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an examination.

This is no different for online degree programs. So although you can still obtain your degree online, a significant amount of the training will be fulfilled either in a school lab or in an externship off-campus. Clinical training is often performed in local hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the schools. But the online portion of the training may be accessed in the privacy of your Loomis CA residence. Students who keep working while obtaining their degree usually find that the online approach to learning is much more convenient with their active schedules. Plus online schools are frequently less costly than traditional alternatives. Along with reduced tuition, costs for study materials and commuting may be decreased also. But just make certain that the online college you select is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn with this less formalized type of training, then an online school may be the best option for you.

Questions to Ask Radiologic Tech Colleges

As soon as you have chosen the kind of degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of looking for and assessing Loomis CA x-ray tech schools. You will also have to decide if you prefer to attend classes online or commute to a local campus. If you choose the latter, then obviously the location of the school will be important. The cost of tuition and secondary expenditures will be a material variable as well. But along with location and cost, what more should you factor in when reviewing colleges? Well, you need to find out if the colleges are accredited, and if they sponsor internship or externship programs. To help you find out some of these important details prior to making your selection, we have assembled a list of questions that you should ask the programs you are reviewing.

Are the X-Ray Tech Schools Accredited? Most xray technician schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still imperative to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through an extensive examination of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Loomis CA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Ask if the California radiology technician schools you are interested in have partnerships with local clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific means to receive hands on training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help students and graduates form professional relationships in the Loomis CA medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the radiographer programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Loomis CA healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the school they decide on will need to be within driving distance of their Loomis CA residence. Those who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Loomis CA schools you are considering what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the x-ray tech program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the radiographer  school you finally select can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in Loomis CA, verify that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.

Some Background on Loomis California

Loomis, California

Loomis (formerly, Pine,[5]Pino,[5]Smithville,[7] and Placer[7]) is an incorporated town in Placer County, California, United States. It is part of the Sacramento–Arden-Arcade–Roseville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 6,733 as estimated by the US Census in 2015.[8]

The Placer post office opened on the site in 1861, changed its name to Smithville in 1862, then changed it to Pino in 1869, and in 1890 the Southern Pacific Railroad finally decided on Loomis.[7] The railroad and Post Office found that Pino was confused with the town of Reno, hence the name change to Loomis.[9] The name Smithville honors L.G. Smith, who was one of the town's most prominent leaders.[7]

Loomis takes its name from one of the town's pioneers, James Loomis. At one time, James Loomis was the whole town—saloon keeper, railroad agent, express agent, and postmaster.[7] In the early part of the 20th century, Loomis was the second largest fruit-shipping station in Placer County, Newcastle California, just 6 mi (9.7 km) east of Loomis, was considered the largest.[10]

Loomis remained part of unincorporated Placer County until December 17, 1984, when the Town of Loomis officially incorporated. The Town was in danger of being annexed by its neighbor Rocklin and the residents voted to incorporate to preserve local control, partly on the issue of preserving the "small town" character and historic structures such as the High Hand and Blue Goose fruit packing sheds which sit between Taylor Road (a segment of historic Highway 40) and the Union Pacific Railroad tracks.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 7.27 square miles (18.8 km2), all of it land. Stream drainages are Antelope Creek and Secret Ravine.
