Next, they compare tuition and often gravitate toward the most affordable cost. But while expense and location should be considered, there are additional critical qualifiers also. For instance, you must ask whether or not the radiology tech schools are accredited, or if they offer internships. These inquiries and others you must ask the schools you are examining are provided later in this article. But first, let’s discuss what a radiologic tech does and the degrees and education choices that are offered.

Radiology Tech Occupation Description

There are a number of professional titles for x-ray techs (technicians or technologists). They can also be referred to as radiologic technicians or technologists, radiographers or radiology techs. Regardless of the name, each has the identical primary job function, which is to employ imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the objective of diagnosis and treatment. A number of radiologic technologists may also administer radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Many elect to practice as generalists, while others may choose a specialty, for example mammography. They can practice in Cripple Creek CO clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray tech might work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers must maintain their equipment and also frequently assess its functionality and safety. They are also required to keep detailed records of each of their diagnostic procedures. As Cripple Creek CO health practitioners, they are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct.

Radiologic technologist students have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most common among technicians, normally takes 18 months to two years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to complete and is more comprehensive in nature. The majority of students select a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional similar majors that may be acceptable as well. One thing to keep in mind is that Cripple Creek CO radiographer schools have a clinical training or lab component as a component of their course of study. It may frequently be satisfied by taking part in an externship program which a large number of colleges offer through local clinics and hospitals in their region. After you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you will need to comply with any certification or licensing mandates in Colorado or the state you will be working as applicable.

Radiographer Licensing and Certification

When you have graduated from an X-Ray tech college, based on the state where you will be working you might need to become licensed. Most states do mandate licensing, and their requirements vary so contact your state. Currently, all states that do require licensing will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the licensing application, but several accept other options for testing also. A number of states also require certification as part of the licensing procedure, if not it is voluntary. However, numerous Cripple Creek CO employers prefer to hire radiology techs that are certified so it might enhance your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an approved program in addition to a passing score on their rigorous examination. ARRT also requires re-certification every other year, which may be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an examination.

Online X-Ray Technician Colleges

attending x-ray tech school online in Cripple Creek 80813As a part of every degree program, x-ray tech schools will have clinical or lab training included in their curriculum. This is the same for online degree programs. So although you can still obtain your online degree, a large amount of the training will be satisfied either in a college lab or in an externship off campus. Clinical training is often performed in regional hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the colleges. But the online segment of the training can be accessed in the privacy of your Cripple Creek CO residence. Students who keep working while earning their degree usually discover that the online style of education is much more practical with their busy schedules. Plus online schools are frequently more affordable than on-campus alternatives. Along with lower tuition, expenditures for study materials and commuting may be reduced also. But just be sure that the online program you enroll in is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less formalized style of training, then an online school may be the ideal option for you.

Points to Ask Radiology Tech Programs

After you have chosen the type of degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of looking for and evaluating Cripple Creek CO x-ray tech schools. You will also need to decide if you want to attend online classes or drive to a nearby campus. If you choose the latter, then naturally the location of the college will be critical. The cost of tuition and ancillary expenses will be an important variable as well. But along with cost and location, what more should you consider when comparing colleges? Well, you should check out if the schools are accredited, and if they sponsor internship or externship programs. To help you learn some of these important details prior to making your decision, we have put together a list of questions that you need to ask the schools you are reviewing.

Are the X-Ray Technician Programs Accredited? A large number of radiology tech colleges have earned some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still crucial to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through an extensive assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Cripple Creek CO health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Provided? Ask if the Colorado xray technician schools you are assessing have partnerships with regional clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific means to obtain practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can assist students and graduates form professional connections in the Cripple Creek CO medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Find out if the x-ray tech schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Cripple Creek CO healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they select will have to be within commuting distance of their Cripple Creek CO residence. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Cripple Creek CO colleges you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the x-ray technician program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the x-ray tech  college you ultimately pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in Cripple Creek CO, check that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family obligations.

When getting ready to interview for an X-Ray Tech job, it's advantageous to reflect on questions you may be asked. Some Background on Cripple Creek Colorado

Cripple Creek, Colorado

The City of Cripple Creek is the Statutory City that is the county seat of Teller County, Colorado, United States.[8] The city population was 1,189 at the 2010 United States Census. Cripple Creek is a former gold mining camp located 44 miles (71 km) southwest of Colorado Springs near the base of Pikes Peak. The Cripple Creek Historic District, which received National Historic Landmark status in 1961, includes part or all of the city and the surrounding area. The city is now a part of the Colorado Springs, CO Metropolitan Statistical Area.

For many years Cripple Creek's high valley, at an elevation of 9,494 feet (2,894 m), was considered no more important than a cattle pasture. Many prospectors avoided the area after the Mount Pisgah hoax, a mini gold rush caused by salting (adding gold to worthless rock).[9]

On the 20th of October, 1890, Robert Miller "Bob" Womack discovered a rich ore and the last great Colorado gold rush began. Thousands of prospectors flocked to the region, and before long Winfield Scott Stratton located the famous Independence lode, one of the largest gold strikes in history. In three years, the population increased from five hundred to ten thousand by 1893. Although $500 million worth of gold ore was dug from Cripple Creek, Womack died penniless on 10 August 1909.[10]

In 1896 Cripple Creek suffered two disastrous fires. The first occurred on April 25 destroying half of the city including much of the business district. Four days later another fire destroyed much of the remaining half. The city was rebuilt in a period of a few months, most historic buildings today date back to 1896.[11]

By 1900, Cripple Creek and its sister city, Victor, were substantial mining communities.
