And considering that the majority of states do mandate that x-ray techs become licensed, depending on where you subsequently practice you might need preparation to pass a licensing test. So it’s imperative that you investigate each of the colleges you are looking at in order to evaluate each program. Most potential students begin by searching for technical schools or colleges that are within commuting distance of their homes. Next, they check tuition and frequently settle on the lowest cost. But while expense and location must be considered, there are additional important qualifications also. For instance, you need to find out if the radiology tech schools are accredited, or if they sponsor internship programs. These questions and others you must ask the schools you are evaluating are presented later in this post. But first, let’s talk about what a x-ray technician does and the credentials and training choices that are offered.

X-Ray Technician Job Summary

There are multiple professional designations for x-ray techs (technicians or technologists). They can also be referred to as radiologic technologists, radiologic technicians, radiographers or radiology techs. Irrespective of the name, they all have the same principal job description, which is to employ imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists may also administer radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Many opt to work as generalists, while others may choose a specialization, such as mammography. They may work in Bradenton FL clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray tech may work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers have to take care of their equipment and routinely evaluate its functionality and safety. They are additionally expected to retain in-depth records of all of their diagnostic procedures. As Bradenton FL health practitioners, they must adhere to a code of conduct and a high professional standard.

Radiology Tech Degree Options

Radiologic technologist students have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most common among techs, generally requires 18 months to two years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to four years to finish and is more expansive in scope. Most students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are other related majors that may be acceptable as well. One thing to consider is that Bradenton FL radiographer colleges have a practical training or lab component as part of their curriculum. It may often be satisfied by participating in an internship or externship program which many schools offer through local hospitals and clinics in their region. Once you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you must abide by any licensing or certification mandates in Florida or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

Radiographer Licensing and Certification

After you have graduated from an x-ray technician school, depending on the state where you will be employed you may need to become licensed. The majority of states do mandate licensing, and their prerequisites vary so get in touch with your state. At present, all states that do require licensing will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the licensing application, but a number accept additional options for testing also. A number of states also call for certification as a component of the licensing process, if not it is voluntary. Having said that, numerous Bradenton FL employers prefer to hire radiology techs that are certified so it may increase your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an accepted program in addition to a passing score on their comprehensive examination. ARRT also calls for re-certification every 2 years, which can be fulfilled with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an examination.

Online Radiology Technologist Degrees

attending x-ray tech school online in Bradenton 34201As a part of every degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have clinical or lab training included in their course of study. This is the same for online degree schools. So while you can still obtain your online degree, a large portion of the training will be fulfilled either in a college lab or in an externship off campus. Practical training is usually conducted in regional family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the schools. However the online section of the training can be accessed in the privacy of your Bradenton FL residence. Students who keep working while obtaining their degree usually discover that the online approach to learning is far more convenient with their busy schedules. Plus online colleges are generally more affordable than traditional options. Along with reduced tuition, expenditures for commuting and study materials may be reduced also. But just confirm that the online school you pick is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn with this less structured type of training, then an online school may be the right option for you.

Topics to Ask Radiographer Schools

Once you have chosen the kind of degree that you want to earn, you can start the process of locating and evaluating Bradenton FL x-ray technician schools. You will also have to determine if you prefer to attend online classes or travel to a local campus. If you choose the latter, then of course the location of the college will be critical. The price of tuition and supplementary expenditures will be a determining variable as well. But in addition to cost and location, what more should you consider when evaluating colleges? Well, you need to check out if the schools are accredited, and if they sponsor internship or externship programs. To help you learn some of these essential details prior to making your decision, we have put together a list of questions that you must ask the programs you are reviewing.

Are the X-Ray Technician Colleges Accredited? The majority of radiology technician schools have earned some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a detailed evaluation of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Bradenton FL health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Ask if the Florida radiology tech colleges you are interested in have associations with regional clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great manner to receive practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Bradenton FL medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Find out if the radiographer schools you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Bradenton FL healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the school they choose will need to be within driving distance of their Bradenton FL home. Individuals who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit far in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Bradenton FL colleges you are looking at what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the x-ray technician program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the x-ray tech  college you ultimately pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in Bradenton FL, verify that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.

Why Did You Want to Become a Radiologic Technologist?

When getting ready to interview for an X-Ray Tech position, it's helpful to reflect on questions you may be asked. One of the things that interviewers often ask radiographer candidates is "What made you pick radiography as a profession?". What the interviewer is trying to uncover is not just the private reasons you might have for becoming an Xray technician, but also what qualities and talents you have that make you good at what you do. You will probably be asked questions relating specifically to radiography, along with a certain number of routine interview questions, so you should ready several approaches about how you would like to address them. Considering there are so many factors that go into choosing a career, you can respond to this primary question in a variety of ways. When preparing an answer, try to include the reasons the work interests you as well as the talents you have that make you an outstanding X-Ray tech and the leading candidate for the position. Don't make an effort to memorize a response, but write down some ideas and topics that pertain to your own strengths and experiences. Reading through sample answers can help you to formulate your own thoughts, and give you ideas of what to include to enthuse the interviewer.
